Jim’s 1993 book was originally published by Hahne: The Magic of Alan Wakeling. It was quickly a bestseller in the world of magic, a hardbound book that detailed the career and incredible creations of this noted magician and inventor. The book went through two editions and sold out completely. Much of the material was considered so valuable, so useful to performers, that the material in The Magic of Alan Wakeling formed the basis of a number of professional acts. In fact, it’s not surprising not note that Alan’s magic has been responsible for a number of important careers in magic.
In 2006, Carroll & Graf arranged to republish the book in an economical new edition, paperback. The Carroll & Graf edition contained every word of the original book, and after being available for several years, this edition also sold out and has been unavailable.
We have a box of the Carroll & Graf editions. (The original Hahne hardbound books are no longer available and occasionally turn up on used book lists for a high price). There aren’t many of these paperback copies. If this is a book you’ve missed, this is a rare opportunity to purchase it, in new condition, and add this material to your repertoire. But please be advised, these books won’t be available for very long.
Alan was a “secret source” for many magicians through his career. In this book, detailed instructions appear for his Billiard Ball routine (inspired by the Benson routine, and popularized in recent years by Mark Kalin), Drink Act (later performed by Earl Nelson), and Sawing in Half effect (now being used by many popular illusionists). His Handcuff Escape act has become a standard in the profession. In addition, there are dozens of stand-up, close-up, and illusion effects that were created or used by Alan. The Fan Act is a manipulation routine with folding fans; the Numerology Act is an innovative close-up routine which, incredibly, blends mentalism with close-up with striking theatricality and directness.
Many readers will be drawn to Alan’s notable illusions. But don’t neglect the other surprising effects like the Name Matrix, Joker Poker, or the Autograph Exchange (a Card to Wallet without palming).
The book is illustrated by Jim Steinmeyer and includes many photos from Alan’s career. Introductions were written by (among others) Channing Pollock, Mark Wilson, and Ricky Jay. It’s a beautiful book, and an inspiring book. You’ll have an opportunity to benefit from Alan’s expertise, the same way that performers like Mark Wilson, Marvyn Roy, Channing Pollock, and many others depended upon his creativity. A classic of magic, now is your chance to purchase it.
Only one per customer. As this is a collectable book, we cannot sell multiple copies. We can offer these for sale for $85, and postage will be added in the checkout.
